An Upwork cover letter is the personalized message you attach to a job proposal when applying for a project on Upwork. It acts as a short pitch explaining why you're a good fit for the project and how you can help the client.

An Upwork cover letter has two key parts:

What Should a Winning Upwork Cover Letter Structure Look Like?

A winning cover letter runs on three moves: open with a question about the job, give one specific proof point, and close with another question. Everything below is why each move works, pulled from an analysis of 133,872 real proposals.

Keep it short. Aim for under 100 words or over 300. The 100–149 band replies worst (6.7%), so the middle is the dead zone. Design and Data Science do best under 100 words; Dev, VA, and Admin roles peak at 100–199.

On formatting: Upwork’s proposal editor supports rich text, so use bold strategically to highlight key outcomes or tech stacks. Avoid ALL-CAPS lines, which can come across as aggressive.

6 Upwork Cover Letter Samples by Role (Copy-Paste Ready)

Each template follows the same recipe: open with a question, provide one proof point, close with a question. Brackets are the one detail you swap in from the actual job post before sending. Don't send any of these clean.

Opens on the client's real worry, not your résumé. One specific result on the same stack reads as 'done this before.' Include a portfolio or GitHub link, but ensure it contains no personal contact info. Never send a Calendly link, as sharing off-platform scheduling tools before a contract is active strictly violates Upwork’s Terms of Service.

The opener shows you think in outcomes, not word count. One published piece with a number beats a list of niches. Closing on audience keeps the thread alive.

Under 100 words because Design replies best there. Showreel goes on Vimeo on purpose. In the data, Vimeo links lifted replies by +7.85pp while Behance and Dribbble slightly hurt.

These clients screen for accuracy and format first, so the opener confirms exactly that. Naming a volume and a zero-error result does the convincing.

Under 100 words, Vimeo link, question at both ends. That's the exact recipe Design &amp; Creative rewards. A named turnaround signals the reliability video clients quietly worry about.

Admin roles reward a custom opener, so this names the client's pain instead of listing skills. This is also where an Indian freelancer can turn the timezone into a selling point: "I can clear your inbox overnight so it's done by your morning."

When an overseas client pays an Indian freelancer, a chunk usually disappears into bank fees and a marked-up exchange rate before it reaches the freelancer. Skydo skips that. You pay a flat fee: $19 for payments under $2,000, $29 up to $10,000, and 0.3% above that, with zero markup on the exchange rate and a free FIRA certificate on every transfer. Setup takes about 15 minutes.

What Is the Upwork Freelancer Service Fee?

The Upwork Freelancer Service Fee is the percentage Upwork deducts from a freelancer's earnings on each contract. Upwork's current documentation states that the fee can range from 0% to 15% per contract, with the applicable rate shown before the freelancer submits a proposal or accepts an offer. Once the contract begins, the fee is locked for that contract.

Upwork previously used a tiered fee structure based on how much a freelancer billed a client:

This older structure meant that freelancers who continued working with the same client could move into lower fee tiers as their total billings increased. Note that this is not Upwork's current standard fee structure.

The applicable fee can also vary depending on the type of Upwork arrangement. Upwork Payroll and Any Hire do not use the standard Freelancer Service Fee, while Direct Contracts have a reduced fee. Enterprise contracts can have separate terms.

For example, if a freelancer's applicable Upwork service fee is 10%, a $500 project would incur a $50 service fee, leaving the freelancer with $450. This is before <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/withdraw-funds-from-upwork">withdrawing funds from Upwork</a> or currency-conversion costs. The actual deduction can be higher or lower if a different service-fee percentage applies to the contract.

What Does Upwork Charge Freelancers Beyond the Service Fee?

Beyond the Upwork Freelancer Service Fee, freelancers can also pay for Connects and withdraw their earnings. These additional costs depend on how often they apply for jobs and which withdrawal method they choose.

Connects are virtual tokens that freelancers use to submit proposals for jobs on Upwork. The number of Connects required varies by job, and freelancers can also use them for features such as boosted proposals.

Each Connect currently costs $0.15, although Upwork also provides some Connects through rewards, promotions and certain membership benefits. This means the amount a freelancer spends on Connects depends on how actively they apply for projects. There is no fixed monthly Connects cost that applies to every freelancer.

For freelancers comparing ways to apply for projects, understanding <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/how-to-make-a-bid-on-upwork">how to make a bid on Upwork</a> can clarify where Connects fit into the overall cost of finding work.

Upwork offers several withdrawal methods, including Direct to Local Bank, PayPal and Payoneer, although available options vary by location.

For Indian freelancers using Direct to Local Bank, Upwork charges $0.99 per withdrawal. Some banks may also charge their own incoming fees. Upwork states Direct to Local Bank withdrawals should generally arrive within 4 business days once the withdrawal method is active.

PayPal has a separate fee structure. Upwork charges a fee per transfer, while PayPal may apply additional charges depending on the freelancer's country, currency and withdrawal method. Upwork specifically notes that PayPal India may classify Upwork withdrawals as payments for services and apply additional fees.

Currency conversion can also reduce the final amount received. Upwork’s payment partners handle currency conversion and may include a markup in the exchange rate. The actual cost varies depending on the withdrawal method and currencies involved.

Note that the actual Freelancer Service Fee can vary by contract.

*The 10% service fee shown here is an illustrative example. Upwork's current Freelancer Service Fee can range from 0% to 15% per contract, so the actual fee and final amount will depend on the contract.

How Much Actually Lands in Your Indian Bank Account?&nbsp;

For an Indian freelancer, the amount that reaches a bank account can be lower than the original Upwork project value because the freelancer may pay a Upwork service fee and withdrawal or currency-conversion costs. The exact amount depends on the contract's service-fee rate and the withdrawal method chosen.

Let’s consider a Mumbai-based UI designer who earns $1,200 on Upwork.

Note: The following example uses a 10% Upwork service fee and PayPal withdrawal purely for illustration. Upwork's current Freelancer Service Fee can range from 0% to 15% per contract, so the actual deduction may differ.

Assuming a 10% service fee, Upwork deducts $120 from the $1,200 project value.

The freelancer therefore has $1,080 available for withdrawal.

Upwork supports PayPal as a withdrawal method. Upwork's current documentation does not list a separate Upwork withdrawal fee for PayPal in the same way it lists the $0.99 fee for Direct to Local Bank. PayPal's own fees and conversion costs therefore need to be considered separately.

PayPal states that when a balance or payment received is converted into another currency, its transaction exchange rate includes a 3% fee above the base exchange rate.

Using an illustrative USD/INR rate of ₹95.695 per US dollar, the $1,080 balance would have a mid-market value of approximately ₹1,03,351. After applying PayPal's 3% conversion cost, the estimated amount converted to INR would be about ₹1,00,250.

If the full $1,200 were converted at the illustrative ₹95.695 mid-market rate, it would be worth approximately ₹1,14,834.

Note: The actual amount an Indian freelancer receives will vary based on the Upwork service-fee percentage, withdrawal method, applicable provider fees, exchange rate and any bank charges.

What Are the FIRC and FEMA Compliance Risks for Indian Freelancers on Upwork?

Indian freelancers receiving payments from foreign clients need to maintain appropriate records of their international receipts and comply with applicable tax and foreign-exchange requirements. FIRC and <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/importance-of-fira-for-freelancers">FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice)</a>/NOC documentation can provide evidence of foreign remittances received through Upwork, but the document available can depend on the payment processor and the freelancer's bank.

Remittance records can help establish that foreign payments were received and may be relevant for tax, GST and export-related compliance. The exact documentation required depends on the freelancer's circumstances and the compliance purpose.

The Upwork service fee is only one part of the cost of getting paid. Once your earnings leave Upwork, the withdrawal method you choose can affect your final take-home amount. <a href="https://www.skydo.com/">Skydo</a> offers free global receiving accounts in currencies such as USD, EUR and GBP, with zero FX markup, flat transaction fees and free instant FIRA generated automatically with each payment.

How Can Indian Freelancers Reduce Upwork Fees?

Indian freelancers can reduce the overall cost of working through Upwork by combining selective bidding, careful withdrawal choices and compliant ways to manage long-term client relationships.

Once you are ready to compare payment options for international freelance work, make sure you pick the <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/best-international-payment-platforms-for-freelancers-india">best international payment gateways </a>to<a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/avoid-hidden-international-transaction-charges"> avoid hidden international transaction charges</a>.

How Does Skydo Help Indian Freelancers Keep More of What Upwork Pays?

Skydo helps Indian freelancers keep more of what Upwork pays. It directly addresses the two things that eventually reduce take-home after the platform's own service fee, i.e., currency conversion loss and missing compliance documentation. With <a href="https://www.skydo.com/">Skydo</a>, you get:

On a $1,080 withdrawal after Upwork's own cut, this comes out far cheaper than a 2% to 4% PayPal conversion spread. This cuts down the <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/best-way-transfer-money-internationally">international bank transfer fees for freelancers in India</a>.

A graphic designer portfolio pulls together a designer's strongest work into one place. The goal is showing skill, range, and a professional way of working to whoever is considering hiring them.

Clients rely on it as the first and is often the only way to judge whether hiring someone makes sense. That judgment happens well ahead of a call, a signed contract, or any real back-and-forth.

However, note that a gallery of finished images is not the same thing as a portfolio. A portfolio captures something harder to pin down, i.e., the person behind the work, their creative point of view, and a sense of what collaborating with them would be like.

How to Make a Portfolio for Graphic Designer

To make a graphic design portfolio, define your niche, select your strongest work, turn each project into a case study, add an About and Contact page, choose a suitable platform, and keep the portfolio updated. A clear sequential structure also helps international clients understand your expertise and professionalism quickly.

Why Every Graphic Designer Needs a Professional Portfolio

A professional portfolio helps graphic designers get considered for work by giving potential clients a quick way to assess their skills, visual style, and suitability for a project. Without that evidence, even a capable designer can be overlooked before a conversation begins.

What to Include in a Graphic Design Portfolio

A graphic design portfolio should include selected work samples, case studies that explain the process behind each one, an About page, and a clear Contact or Hire Me section.

Getting paid once an international client signs on is a separate part of the freelance workflow. Make sure you are well-aware of <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/freelance-payment-methods-india">how to receive international payments as a freelancer in India</a>.

How Do You Turn Your Portfolio Into Client Inquiries?

Your portfolio can generate more client inquiries when it clearly positions your services, showcases relevant work, and gives potential clients an obvious way to get in touch.

Graphic Designer Portfolio Examples and Inspiration

Two real and publicly available portfolios show how a strong structure can make a designer's work easier to understand, explore, and act on. For example:

What to take from it: Do not make visitors piece together what you do. Use your homepage to establish your strongest work and services quickly, then use an About or information page to explain your approach and make it easy for potential clients to contact you.

What to take from it: A portfolio can have a distinctive visual identity without becoming difficult to use. Experiment with your layout, but keep project navigation, service information, and contact details obvious enough that a potential client never has to search for them.

The takeaway is that a strong portfolio does more than display attractive work. It helps visitors understand what you do, how you work, and what to do next.

How Do Indian Freelance Graphic Designers Get Paid by International Clients?

Indian freelance graphic designers can receive payments from international clients through SWIFT wire transfers, payment platforms, remittance services, or virtual foreign currency accounts. The costs, processing times, and documentation requirements can vary significantly between these options. Make sure you:

<a href="https://www.skydo.com/">Skydo </a>is designed for Indian freelancers and businesses receiving international payments. Its virtual accounts let clients pay in currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, SGD, AUD, and CAD. The current pricing is a flat at:

Skydo does not charge any monthly fee. Each transaction includes a free instant FIRA generated automatically, so freelancers do not have to separately request the document from their bank. Account setup takes about 5 minutes, and payments are settled to the Indian bank account within 24 hours.

For a freelancer who has built a portfolio to attract international clients, having a clear and documented payment process is the next part of delivering a professional client experience. Which Are the Best Countries to Hire Freelancers in 2026?

The best countries to hire freelancers in 2026 are Poland, the Czech Republic, the Philippines, India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Pakistan, each strong in different skill categories, price ranges, and time zone fits.

There's no one "best" country in the abstract. The right answer depends on what you're hiring for, how much time zone overlap you need, and how much English fluency matters for the work. If you're scanning top freelancing countries lists to shortlist a market, these eight consistently come up across skill, cost, and reliability rankings.

Note: Indicative rate ranges, depending on skill niche, experience level, and platform.

Why Do Businesses Hire Freelancers from Other Countries?

Businesses hire freelancers from other countries to access a wider talent pool, manage costs and find specialised skills. Some key reasons include:

What Factors Should You Actually Evaluate Before Hiring?

Before hiring, evaluate six things: how closely the portfolio matches your exact use case, communication style and responsiveness, real time-zone overlap, rate structure, local market context, and whether you're sourcing directly or through a reputable platform.

None of these factors exists in a vacuum; the goal is to weigh them together against what your specific project actually needs, rather than optimising for any one of them (like price) in isolation. It's also worth noting that which country is best for self-employed professionals to be based in doesn't necessarily mirror which country is best for you to hire from; a strong self-employment environment reflects local tax and business-registration ease, while your hiring decision should be driven by skill fit and cost.

How to Pay International Freelancers Without Losing Money?

Businesses can pay international freelancers through PayPal, SWIFT bank transfers or cross-border payment platforms. However, the total cost can vary significantly due to transfer fees, currency conversion markups and receiving charges. Comparing the total cost before choosing a payment method can help businesses reduce unnecessary fees. That's not a minor line item; it can eat away at most or all of the cost advantage you were hiring internationally to capture in the first place.

Certain platforms have bulk payment workflows, paying out to multiple freelancers at once, that helps cut down on per-transaction overhead when you're working with a larger team or a handful of ongoing contracts at a time. This matters even more for businesses outsourcing overseas freelancers at scale, where dozens of small fee percentages add up fast across a full contractor roster.

When selecting a payment platform, think beyond the advertised send fee:

For Indian businesses, especially, it is not simply about cost; it is about compliance. For outward remittance to foreign freelancers, you will have to follow the RBI guidelines, which means you should have proper invoices, purpose codes, and bank documentation before you make any payment. Read more about it in the Watch Out box below.

What Are the Compliance Rules for Hiring Foreign Freelancers?

If an Indian company is hiring a foreign freelancer, the outward remittance rules as per RBI guidelines will be applicable. This is a different set of rules from what a freelancer follows when money is received in India. It's easy to confuse the two, but the compliance burden here is on the hiring business, not the freelancer.

Before you pay a foreign freelancer, make sure you have:

Beyond payment, companies hiring freelancers abroad must also comply with the labour laws applicable in the freelancer's home country. Misidentification of a contractor, or a failure to identify a local compliance requirement, can create unexpected liability, even for what might seem like a simple freelance engagement.

This matters a lot, because there are real and different labour and contractor rules in different countries. What is a legally acceptable freelance engagement in the Philippines may not be the same as what is required in Poland or Ukraine. There is no one global standard to fall back on.

There are three things worth checking before you make a hire:

What Should You Check Before You Finalize a Freelancer Hire?

Before finalising a freelancer, check their skills and experience, portfolio, rates, availability, communication style and payment terms. These factors can help you assess whether they are a good fit for your project and working requirements.

Upwork is a freelance marketplace where clients post projects and freelancers submit proposals to win them. It runs on a proposal-based model, which suits freelancers chasing ongoing work, bigger projects, or anything that needs real back-and-forth with a client.

The platform's roots go back to Elance, founded in 1999, later merged into Elance-oDesk, and eventually rebranded as Upwork.

A project usually starts with a client posting a job description. Freelancers look it over, send a proposal with their rate and relevant experience, and wait to hear back. Work can run hourly or fixed-price, and fixed-price jobs are often split into milestones. There's also Project Catalog, where freelancers package a service upfront so clients can buy it directly, no proposal needed.

For Indian freelancers, Upwork tends to pay off more when the goal is building something longer-term rather than picking up scattered one-off jobs.

Fiverr is a marketplace where sellers list packaged services, called Gigs, that buyers browse and buy directly. It flips the Upwork model: instead of freelancers chasing job posts, clients come looking for a service and find the freelancer through the listing itself.

Fiverr launched in 2010 around cheap, packaged freelance work. It now covers writing, graphic design, programming, web development, video editing, digital marketing, data work, and consulting.

A Gig spells out exactly what's included, how long delivery takes, and what it costs. Sellers can offer tiered packages, usually Basic, Standard, and Premium, or put together custom offers for anything that doesn't fit neatly into those.

Fiverr Pro exists for vetted professionals looking to charge more, though the standard commission still applies underneath it.

<a></a>Upwork vs Fiverr: A Side by Side Comparison

The core difference comes down to how work gets found: Upwork runs on proposals, Fiverr runs on listings.

The right pick usually comes down to the client being targeted. Someone selling a narrowly defined service, a $50 video edit, say, will likely find Fiverr's Gig model more convenient. A developer chasing a six-month contract is probably better off with Upwork's proposal-and-contract structure instead.

That's also why comparing the headline commission alone can mislead. A 20% Fiverr cut can still be worth it if the platform keeps generating orders without any proposal cost. Upwork's lower potential fee doesn't make it automatically cheaper either, not if a freelancer's burning through Connects without winning much.

For Indian freelancers, the real math also has to include withdrawal fees, exchange-rate conversion, and compliance paperwork, none of which show up in either platform's headline number. Once the platform's picked, the next question is how much of that money actually reaches an Indian bank account.

Upwork's freelancer service fee currently sits at 0% to 15% per contract, shown upfront before the freelancer agrees to anything.

That's worth flagging, since a lot of older comparisons still describe Upwork's fee as a 10% to 20% sliding scale. The current Help Centre is clear that it now runs 0% to 15%, fixed once the contract starts.

Connects add another layer of cost. At $0.15 each, they add up fast across multiple proposals, and they're worth budgeting separately from the service fee itself.

Indian freelancers also need to account for tax. Upwork states that 18% India GST can apply to freelancer service fees and Connects, depending on the freelancer's tax details and eligibility.

Withdrawals cost something too, separate from the service fee. Direct to Local Bank runs $0.99 per transfer, though bank-specific charges can still apply on top.

Add it all up and an Upwork freelancer is really tracking three costs: the service fee, what gets spent on Connects, and other costs to actually withdraw the money.

Fiverr pays sellers 80% of every completed order, which puts its effective standard commission at 20%.

Unlike Upwork, there's no Connects-style cost just to list a Gig. Publishing one is nothing like Upwork's proposal model, since there's no ongoing fee attached to putting a listing up in the first place.

That 20% commission applies across the board, including Gig Extras and tips. Fiverr's own Help Centre confirms the 80% figure for sellers.

Fiverr Pro opens the door to premium positioning and higher project values, but charges the same 20% commission regardless.

Indian sellers also need to complete Fiverr's India tax requirements. Fiverr notes that India-based freelancers may fall under GST/TCS and Section 194-O depending on their specific situation.

Payout costs matter here too. Fiverr supports PayPal, Payoneer, and bank transfer through Payoneer, with what's available depending on location, and Payoneer's own fees and processing times vary by method.

Upwork matches client job posts with freelancer proposals, and most jobs require Connects to submit one.

Freelancers start by putting together a profile: title, overview, skills, work history, portfolio, rates. A stronger profile makes it easier for a client to judge someone's expertise before committing to a hire.

Once a relevant job shows up, the freelancer sends a proposal covering their approach, background, and pricing. Proposals cost Connects, priced at $0.15 each. After getting hired, everything runs through Upwork itself. Hourly contracts come with time-tracking and payment protection built in, while fixed-price work runs on milestones with its own protection layer.

None of this is instant. Finding the right jobs and writing proposals that actually land takes time. But a proposal that hits can turn into something bigger than a single project, sometimes a client relationship that keeps paying for years.

Explore more on <a href="https://www.skydo.com/blog/upwork-cover-letter-guide">Upwork cover letter guide</a>

Fiverr runs on Gigs: freelancers publish a listing, buyers order directly, and no proposal gets written for every single sale.

A seller sets up a profile and publishes a Gig with the service, deliverables, pricing, and turnaround time. Buyers browse, compare seller reviews, and buy whatever package fits. Gigs can include multiple tiers, extras, and custom offers, which makes the whole thing well suited to clearly defined work like logo design, blog writing, video editing, or social media content.

Once an order's done, Fiverr pays out 80% of the purchase amount to the seller under its standard terms.

Seller levels and optional promotional tools help established sellers stay visible. A Gig that's positioned well can keep pulling in buyers without a fresh pitch each time. The catch is competition: standing out takes decent positioning, real reviews, a solid portfolio, and pricing that actually fits the category.
